Fifteen

Fifteen months. It's so hard to believe that Dexter is this old. And this HUGE! Strangers on the street peg him at 18 months or 2 years old. Nope, we say. Not yet. Then they watch his drunken sailor walk and they modify their guess. Ah, yes. Definitely fifteen months!

At fifteen months Dex can walk, kind of run, lean down to grab things off the ground, and pretty reliably stands up on his own with no assistance needed from a nearby table, chair, or Mom's leg.

Play date today at our house with friends Henry (on the left) and Levi (in the middle)

At fifteen months Dexter still isn't talking. Sure, he says all kinds of stuff, but nothing understandable. One day, one day.

Who needs words, really, when Dexter's "WTF?" look says it all...

At fifteen months Dex's sign language is enough to get us through the day. He has an awesome "help" sign - take his index finger and stick it in to the other palm. Doesn't get the help he needs? He jams his finger in harder. Nobody looking when he signs help? A small whine to get your attention, then the sign. His sign for "more" is the same as for help. He just uses it at the table. Help, cracker. Or more, cracker. Same thing. He has a sign for "cracker" and a sign for "banana. " Which is almost exactly the same as the sign for "swing." If he's outside on the sidewalk and does that sign, it's a pretty safe bet he wants to swing, though, and doesn't want to eat a banana. He signs "bye" (although I can't get him to sign "hi" which I just don't understand, because it's THE SAME SIGN). He signs "I love you" (kisses the palm of his hand, like he's blowing kisses). He signs "milk" and "drink." Although drink is pretty much the same sign as "bye." He signs "eat" (sticks his finger up his nose) and he signs "water" like for the bathtub water, or water in the fountain at Longwood Gardens. That sign is also sticking his finger up his nose. That one's hysterical at times. The other day John and I were in the kitchen just before dinner. Dex trotted in from the living room, let out a little grunt, shoved his finger up his nose, then turned around and trotted away. OK, kiddo. Guess you're hungry! And he signs "all done." Which is clapping his hands. It's a little confusing at times, and I wish we could change that one up. But, it is what it is and I guess I am just happy he knows when he's all done with something.

Dex also signs "dog" any time he hears a dog barking, sees a dog on the sidewalk, or sees a picture of a dog in a book. He LOVES dogs. A couple weeks ago we were playing with his Leap Frog phonics toy on the fridge. We put in the letter "C." and I said "C, for CoCo." And Dex looked at me and signed "dog." And I, of course, cried my eyes out. One, because I miss the old pup. And two, because Dex still remembers her.

At fifteen months, Dex can open the bi-fold doors of the pantry all by himself, by grabbing the knob and pulling. He can close them, too, from the inside or the outside. He can open a regular door by pulling on the door knob, as long as the door isn't actually latched. Thank the lord he hasn't figured out how to turn the handle yet.

Give it time, Mom. Give it time. I am planning my great escape!

At fifteen months Dexter's curiosity is fun to watch. He will open a drawer to John's dresser, then get down under the drawer and look up at it, trying to figure out how it works. He still tastes lots of things, although he doesn't have something in his mouth at all times any more.

Closing the door. All by himself.

At fifteen months Dex is way more independent. That started when he really used walking as a means of getting somewhere. It's nice now - he will go to the other room to play, all by himself, and can keep himself entertained for a while in the living room as I do dishes in the kitchen.

He is strong, like bull.

At fifteen months Dex can point to his head, his hair, his eyes, his ears, his nose, his mouth, his belly, his arm, his hand, his fingers, and his foot. He can point to himself, to Mom, and to Dad when asked. He follows instructions well - it surprises me all the time how much he understands. He takes a cutting board out of the cupboard. Dex, can you put it away? Well, sure. He will totter back over to the cupboard and put the cutting board away. Dex, are you ready to go outside to play? He's down the stairs and trying to open the door before I can even think about putting my shoes on.

Taking turns playing the xylophone with Mom.

At fifteen months, Dexter's favorite things to do are to read books and to play outside. He LOVES books. He loves to toss them on the ground from his book shelf, and then dig through to find the exact book he wants to read. He'll come walking up to you with a book in his hand and hand it up to you. If you're not looking he'll drop it on your foot. Still not paying attention? He'll pick the book up and poke you with it, grunting a little bit to get your attention. He can point to objects in the books, if you go through them once and tell him what they are. So in the "That's Not My... (pony, puppy, kitten, bear, tractor, frog, etc)" series of books he can find the mouse, the butterflies, the flowers, the snail, the birds, etc. It's pretty impressive.

At fifteen months we take advantage of the nice weather and play outside as much as possible. No toys are needed, really. Just walk down the sidewalk, find a stick, pick a dandelion, climb some stairs, watch the big kids ride bikes, walk out by the road to watch cars and hopefully see a school bus (the coolest thing in the world, a school bus is). Dexter's walking is getting better every day on the uneven grass.

At the race track yesterday. Dex was enthralled with the signs and the water. And, of course, the horses. That's my boy!

At fifteen months Dex sometimes seems less an boy and more a little MAN. And then he falls down and cries and comes crawling to Mom to get a cuddle. And he's my boy again.

Inspection

We had the home inspection today for the new house. So far, so good. No major issues besides the roof, which the owner already knows about and will fix. We're still waiting for radon, septic, water, termite inspections. And the appraisal. And if all that is fine, then I believe we own a new house!

Here's a few pictures. I need some help picking paint colors. And my word, there's some terrible window treatments in this house. But hey - to each his own. If any of you would like some lovely flowery window treatments, by all means - they are yours. FREE! They shall otherwise all be going in the trash. Hmmm. We should just tell the owners to take them with them. I certainly don't want them.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The entryway, stairs, living room. This color is fine, which is good because it carries through to the downstairs and upstairs hallways and would really suck to paint.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The dining room, with sliders out to the sun room. The dining room is really not as purple as it appears here. It'll stay this color for a while.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The kitchen. The wallpaper is terrible, and it'll go eventually, but probably not right this instant unless we find ourselves with extra time.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The family room looking in to kitchen and breakfast nook.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The family room, with terrible blinds that will go, and really terrible paint color. So - WHAT SHOULD I PAINT THIS ROOM? Brown maybe? Like not as dark as our basement now, but darker than our living room now? With an accent wall around the fireplace? What color? Reddish? Hunter green? Probably not blue, as there's blue on the other side of the house. Note this room will pretty much get sun ALL THE TIME. So is brown-ish a bad choice?

From 2010 - 03 04 house

Master bedroom. The terrible window treatments will go, everything else will stay for now. I'm not keen on the border, but whatever.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

Spiffy little office or sitting area attached to master bedroom. We shall use it as an office.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

Crappy picture of the small guest bedroom. It's blue and it'll stay that way for now.

From 2010 - 03 04 house

The super sexy purple guest bedroom. Ummmm, yeah. This one's getting painted NOW. I dunno what color yet. Does it really matter, as long as it's not purple?

From 2010 - 03 04 house

This will be Dexter's room. It's currently white. It'll get painted now, too. But what color? His current room is a yellow that is WAY too bright. But I don't mind yellow. Maybe a deeper yellow. Like, what color did you paint your yellow room, Jeanne?

There's seven trillion more pictures of the inside and the outside of the house here, if you're interested.

We close on both places the end of May, and then we'll rent back the townhouse for a week so we can do some painting before we move in to the new place.

Looking forward to the new house! It's going to be HUGE and fun!

Coming Home

We brought CoCo home today. Not exactly how we'd WANT to bring her home - I'd love to bring home my cute fuzzy dog and give her a great big hug. But we brought home a nice cherry box with her name engraved on a plate on it, and with her ashes inside. Which now brings us to the question of what we're going to DO with CoCo. Leave her on the mantle of the fireplace? Which is maybe kind of creepy, but might be ok. Scatter her ashes somewhere? Where? Here? Sweet Briar? It's hard for me to leave her somewhere that we don't live any more. We won't be here for much longer. We haven't been to Sweet Briar in a long time. So - we'll think on it for a while and decide what to do. Some time.

Speaking of homes, it would appear we bought a new one. We're under contract for a new (well, new to us) house in New London, PA. It's four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, on a acre of land that has a horse farm right in the back yard. Sweet! It's a nice house and we're excited. We have home inspection on Monday, so I'll take some pictures and post them then. Hopefully we'll be moving the first week of June.

We're also thinking of our nice friends who are expecting a baby any second now. We're hoping they come home soon with a new bundle of joy!

Hmmm. Let me check the cameras and see if I have any new photos of the cute small child. Who is babbling up a storm this week. I fully expect perfectly clear complete sentences to be pouring out of his mouth by the end of the month. :-)

Future Ivy Leaguer, I am sure. I mean, why wouldn't Cornell want him, as he's eating a stick and beeping his horn?

Mmmmmm. Dip.

This playdate brought a renewed interest in rolling cars across the floor.

We stole a balloon from the neighbors

It is STILL a constant source of entertainment!

Priceless

Two annual passes to Longwood Gardens for the year... $75

Two fru-fru bottles of iced tea, purchased so we could kind of justify sitting in the fancy cafeteria to eat our PBJ's brought from home... $6.50

One tank of gas because someone (ahem, ME) is a slacker and likes to get to the point of running on fumes before filling up again... $40 (WHAT? $40? This is the cheap car, too!)

Watching your son lean his entire body into a fountain, so he can put his face in the water to blow bubbles... Priceless.

We had an awesome day at Longwood on Sunday.

The tulips were amazing.

And the Childrens' Garden makes this $75 worth every single penny.

A change of clothes was required.

We will be back seven trillion more times this summer...

PS - if you want to see all seventy billion photos of tulips, with oodles of cute child pictures, see this link: Longwood Gardens Pictures

Let's see if this makes it easier for me to post photos on the blog!

Un-Storing

When I was packing up my stuff in January, I wasn't really thinking about April, and it being HOT, and me maybe wanting those short sleeve shirts and sandals I was stashing away in storage. Because in January it was COLD. But now? Decidedly not cold.

So Dex and I went to storage on Saturday to look for my shoes and short sleeve shirts, and our other printer, and some new toys for Dexter. Because also in December and January Dex got lots of cool toys, that I looked at and said "that's cool, but he doesn't know how to stack rings yet. And he doesn't walk. And there's snow on the ground so this cool car thing is useless." But now? Dex does all kinds of new things, and there is certainly no snow on the ground.

So, we're un-packing. Kind of. Not really. Just adding a few boxes to Dexter's closet. And maybe going back to un-bury one more box of Dexter toys. Cuz he's got some cool stuff that I want to play with! :-)

Wandering around the playground with a sippy cup of water. It's an awesome way to keep him hydrated, as he loves sucking on sippy cups.

Yay, Mom rocks! She took me to the Promenade Grill! And all she gave me was this lousy peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

The ridiculously cute game of "where is Dexter, hiding behind the chair and poking me in the back? OH! There he is!"

Dex sat on the ground giggling at this cool frog for a good five minutes before we tried to show him how to use it while standing up. This wasn't quite what we had in mind...

Hold on. Dropped my frog. Gotta pick it up.

Is this how you're supposed to do it, Dad? But then the frog bites me in the leg!

Damn. I fell down. I'll try crawling with the frog instead.

Ah, to hell with it. That frog is a lot of work. How about I eat this here Lego, instead?

OK, so I am pushing the button... Push. Push. PUSH. How come no sound?

Ahhhh. I have to pull the string! Cool!

The boys return from a jaunt to the playground, via car.

One day in the car and Dex already has the "one arm out the window, college boy slouch" going on. Since this picture he has figured out the horn, so he spends the ride with two fingers in his mouth and the other hand just laying on the horn the whole time. He is a rude driver. Must be from New Jersey...

Today we went to the Promenade to look at sea gulls

Dude, Mom. I am busy here. There's birds to watch!

And geese to chase!
